Held in Motion

2025–2026

Trees have been quietly shaping the way I see the world for as long as I can remember. I grew up on a wooded lot and spent much of my childhood exploring a small patch of forest, creating paths, resting in clearings and coming to know the seasonal changes. That early familiarity has stayed with me, and trees remain a subject I return to repeatedly in my photography.

What continues to fascinate me is the tension between their apparent stillness and the complexity of their life. We often encounter trees as fixed elements of the landscape, yet they are constantly growing, responding, communicating, and adapting in ways that science continues to reveal as increasingly intricate. Visually, I find them equally alive. In stillness, their reaching branches and leaves take on a gestural quality. When wind moves through the canopy, branches bend, overlap, tremble, and sweep through space, creating a fluid, lyrical choreography.

In trying to photograph that sense of movement and vitality, conventional long exposures often dissolved the trees into forms that became too indistinct. I began instead to combine multiple exposures, sometimes shifting my position or angle of view between frames. These images were then brought together digitally through stacking methods and selective masking. The process became less about recording a single instant and more about accumulating fragments of perception—something closer to drawing or painting with photographs.

Through this process, I hope to suggest something of the life contained within these familiar forms: not trees as static objects, but as active, changing presences whose complexity is easy to overlook precisely because they are so much a part of our everyday world.
