Thermal

2025

Yellowstone’s geothermal basins can feel less like landscape than evidence of another world. Heat rises from beneath the ground, mineral-rich water reshapes the surface, and microbial life turns changes in temperature and chemistry into fields of yellow, orange, green, black, and blue. What first appears almost abstract is, in fact, a record of living processes and geological forces continually acting upon one another.

I was drawn to the places where those forces became visible: the sharp boundaries between colors, mineral crusts spreading across water, reflections of sky broken by delicate ridges, and pools whose surfaces reveal only hints of the depth below. In some places, geothermal activity sustains unexpected forms of life; in others, it overwhelms what had grown there before.

These photographs look closely at a landscape that seems both primordial and unfinished. Water flows, minerals accumulate, organisms establish themselves along narrow thresholds, and the surface is continually altered. The apparent stillness of the photograph holds only one brief state of a place that is always becoming something else.

Close view of a geothermal surface patterned with vivid orange microbial mats, pale mineral deposits, dark water, and rough gray crust.
Steaming geothermal pools edged by irregular mineral terraces, with green, orange, black, and clear blue water arranged in layered curves.
Dark geothermal water reflects clouds and blue sky while thin pale mineral ridges form branching, vein-like patterns across the surface.
Rippling pale geothermal water meets a narrow band of bright orange microbial growth and a broad foreground of dark, rough mineral crust.
Deep green geothermal spring with a dark central basin, bright mineral formations beneath the water, an orange rim, and reflected trees along the edge.
Pale geothermal basin scattered with fallen logs and standing dead trees, backed by living evergreens beneath a heavy gray sky.
A solitary pine stands on a pale mineral slope overlooking an expansive geothermal basin and eroded ridge beneath dramatic clouds.
Layered white, cream, orange, and brown mineral terraces surround a large dark rock formation beneath a clear blue-violet sky.
A shallow reddish-orange geothermal pool stretches toward a flat horizon, its dark reflective surface mirroring bright clouds and distant trees.
